A simple joy: watch how the shadow moves throughout this equinox day!
As predicted by theory, the bottom of the shadow (the shadow cast by the tip of the gnomon) moves in a straight line. This only happens during the equinoxes.
See you for the spring equinox!
Bonus: If you want to verify the accuracy of this sundial, note that it is located at 06°02’49” east longitude, which is 24 minutes and 11 seconds ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Also note that the equation of time on September 23, 2026, was -7 minutes and 34 seconds.
In other words, to get the legal time, you need to note the time on the sundial and add 1 hour and 28 minutes; or, if daylight saving time is in effect, add 2 hours and subtract 31 minutes and 45 seconds—let’s say 32 minutes.
